| Taranto Overview |
This modern industrial city, set on a peninsula between two oceans, has been around since 708 BC, and in its time has had its share of ups and downs.
At present it is going through a bit of a downer, or rather the once prosperous Old City is, although the new city still attracts crowds to its broad boulevards and chi-chi shops. Famous for its cuisine, Taranto offers some of the finest seafood in Italy.

Archaeological Museum of Taranto (Museo Archeologico di Taranto) – Located at Corso Umberto 41, the museum has the world’s biggest collection of terra-cotta figures, Magna Grecian art, and artefacts from the Stone Age through to modernity.
Grottaglie – Visit this little town just outside Taranto that is dedicated to the production of ceramics, and has its wares displayed in every nook and cranny on the streets.
Castellaneta – Home of that devastatingly handsome heartthrob of the silent screen, Rudolph Valentino, Castellaneta is also known for its views of the Gulf of Taranto, the Basilcata mountains, and it “cave churches”.
Citta Vecchia, (The Old Town) – Lying on a island that separates two seas, the Mare Piccolo, and the Mare Grande, is the heart of the old town, with crumbling old buildings and architecture.
Cuisine – Situated as it is between two seas, Taranto is famous for its seafood, considered by many to be the best in Italy.

Beard & Moustache Festival (September) - Held in Grottaglie annually, this is a great partying event at the Piazza Regina Margherita.
Putignano Carnival (December/February) - Try to get to Putignana for this famous carnival, which is the longest and one of the oldest in the world.
