Catania lies in the shadow of Mount Etna and is the second largest city in Sicily. Volcanic rock is evident in the black/ grey buildings. The eruption of 1693 devastated the city, but it was rebuilt fast and well.
It’s a very spacious and open place and boasts it's fair share of historical sights.The Ionian Sea port is a busy working harbour and there many museums and Roman sights.
This lively city is to be enjoyed by everyone. |

Museo Civico Belliniano - This museum is dedicated to some of Catania's famous citizens including Verga, Bellini and Emilio Greco. Though the composer Bellini gets pride of place.
Palazzo Biscari - The impressive building is decorated with elaborate stonework, staircase and grand rooms. Although a private home, most is still available to view.
Duomo - Catania's Cathedral is in the centre of the city and was reconstructed in the 18th century. It has had an interesting history since and is home to Bellini's tomb.
Castello Ursino & Museo Civico - A square castle with a keep that dates back to the 13th century. Combined with the museum it's an interesting 2 hours.
Marella Ferrera - Sicily's most famous designer has a shop here and its worth seeing some of the designs, even if a few are outrageous and unwearable. |

Festa di Sant' Agatha (February 3rd to 5th) - 48 hours of street parties and the famous Catania market is a blast.
Ferragosto (15th August) - This mid summer festival is celebrated with fireworks and feasting. |
