| Aosta Overview |
Aosta was founded by the Romans in 25 BC, but precious little remains of that period. Located high in the mountains, means fresh air and a very pleasant town with narrow cobbled streets and Alpine style buildings.
The towns position is ideal for skiing in the Alps, there are plenty of ski resorts nearby in the Mont Blanc area. For hikers there is a national park in the area to explore. So Aosta is a good place to visit all year round. |

Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso - The first national park declared in Italy. Beautiful views, Larch and Fir woods, glaciers and rich fauna are all to be enjoyed.
Castello di Sarre - The 13th century castle is only a short ride from Aosta. The decor theme is hunting as the owner used it as a lodge, but its worth seeing.
Col di San Bernardo - North of the town just over the border of Switzerland, this former monastery is now an interesting museum
Piazza E. Chanoux - The central piazza is where locals congregate for coffee at the pavement cafes, and there are plenty of little shops lining the square.
The Cathedral - The plain exterior hides a really interesting gothic interior. The museum holds many treasures of the religious kind. |
